As a global network of academic institutions, the Himalayan University Consortium (HUC) contributes to enhanced collaboration among universities and other knowledge-generating and exchange institutions within and outside the Hindu Kush Himalaya (HKH) region.
We work to build dynamic mountain knowledge partnerships between universities and HKH partner organisations to promote research and learning in and about the region. We facilitate coordination and collaboration amongst educational institutions to develop joint research and knowledge management programmes on contemporary topics such as climate change adaptation, mitigation, and resilience building, environmental conservation, culture and heritage safeguarding etc.. In doing so, we strengthen capacity and help regional institutions address some of the shortfalls they may have in terms of capacity and funding.
Thematic Working Groups (TWGs) are member-led, self-funded and self-organising clusters, to operate on a resource-sharing basis. The TWGs endeavor to collaborate on regional research, transboundary projects, joint publications, knowledge depository, sharing and dissemination.
HUC Fellowships provide a platform for knowledge exchange, capacity building, and interdisciplinary collaboration, targeting both individuals and institutions committed to the sustainable development of the Hindu Kush Himalayan (HKH) region.
HUC offers fellowships for free of charge, with no membership fee required.
In return for the membership fee, fellows will have voting rights on key consortium issues and continued access to HUC’s high-quality services.
HUC’s collaborative learning initiatives are at the heart of its mission to empower individuals and institutions in the HKH region. Through these initiatives, HUC promotes knowledge-sharing and equips stakeholders to tackle planetary pressing challenges in the HKH region.
The Himalayan University Consortium (HUC) is a dynamic network of academic and research institutions focused on promoting sustainable development in the Hindu Kush Himalaya (HKH) region. The International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) launched HUC in 2007 to bridge knowledge gaps, foster interdisciplinary collaboration, and empower communities to address the unique challenges of mountain ecosystems.
HUC has over 100 member institutions and provides a platform for knowledge sharing, capacity building, and innovative research. It connects scholars, development practitioners and humanitarian, and policymakers to develop resilient solutions that promote environmental sustainability, climate adaptation, and improved livelihoods in the region.
HUC’s Country Chapters serve as a localised hub for member institutions in each HKH country. These chapters:
