About Us

Our Journey

The Himalayan University Consortium (HUC) is a collaborative network of universities and academic institutions dedicated to strengthening research and scholarship in the Hindu Kush Himalayan (HKH) region. Established in 2007, HUC aims to build a dynamic mountain knowledge partnership among universities, The International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), and regional member countries—Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, India, Myanmar, Nepal, and Pakistan—to promote research and learning.

Since its inception, HUC has grown to include over 100 universities across the eight regional member countries, along with institutions from other regions engaged in sustainable mountain development activities.

Key Milestones:

  • 2007: ICIMOD established HUC to strengthen academic collaboration
  • 2012: HUC first HUC academy to train young researchers
  • 2018: Membership expanded, focusing on interdisciplinary and transboundary collaboration
  • 2020–2024: HUC led Initiatives on climate resilience, springshed management, and sustainable livelihoods

Through these efforts, HUC has strengthened research capacity, fostered cross-border collaboration, and empowered the next generation of leaders to address the unique challenges of the HKH region.
