Southwest University for Nationalities is located in Chengdu, a national historical and cultural city with the reputation of “Land of Abundance”. It is a comprehensive general university directly under the State Ethnic Affairs Commission, and a university jointly established by the State Ethnic Affairs Commission, the Ministry of Education, Sichuan Province, and Chengdu City. The school was formerly known as Southwest University for Nationalities, which was founded in July 1950 and officially established on June 1, 1951. It was renamed Southwest University for Nationalities in April 2003. It is one of the earliest ethnic universities established in New China under the personal care of Mao Zedong, Zhou Enlai, Deng Xiaoping and other older generation proletarian revolutionaries. Comrade Deng Xiaoping wrote inscriptions for the school twice. Wang Weizhuo, then vice chairman of the Southwest Military and Political Committee and director of the Southwest Ethnic Affairs Commission, was the first dean. In 2003, the school won excellent results in the first round of undergraduate teaching work level evaluation of the Ministry of Education; in 2013, it was selected as one of the “Top 50 Universities with Typical Experience in Graduate Employment in China”; in 2017, it was selected as one of the “Top 50 Universities with Typical Experience in Innovation and Entrepreneurship in China”; in 2017 and 2020, it was awarded the title of “National Civilized Campus” for two consecutive terms.
